Belief

I believe that technologies purpose is to improve peoples’ lives, be that of an individual, a society or a business. Technology is a tool that when utilised properly can bring great and powerful change. I find the possibility of this transformation exciting and it inspires me to explore the many ways this can be achieved. I always seek to be learning new and different methods so that I can be a forerunner in bringing about that change.

Career

Engineering Manager - Howden Insurance

Oct 2024 - Current

Strategic leadership role managing two remote product teams with 8 direct reports ranging from Associate to Senior Engineers and QA Engineers. The teams are building .NET Blazor front end applications to reduce sales cycle time and digitising paper based processes.

Engineering Manager I - Birdie Care Services

Jan 2023 - Sept 2024

Successfully managed several remote teams, each comprising up to six engineers, across multiple domains including the ‘Care Management’ domain and ‘Data and Security’ domain. I worked with Associates to Staff Engineers, including the promotion of 3 Associates to Mid level and one Senior to Staff.

Senior Full Stack Software Engineer - Birdie Care Services

Jan 2021 - Dec 2022

Worked in the ‘Care Management’ domain solving product problems with distributed microservices using TypeScript (frontend & backend), Node.js, React and React Native. Managed hosting on AWS utilising Postgres, Redis and Kubernetes configured with Terraform.

Technical Lead - Substrakt Health

Sept 2016 - Dec 2020

After cutting my teeth on a number of large scale arts organisation sites for a year with their sister company, Substrakt, I joined the Substrakt Health team. I came on board just after their flagship product PatientPack was released. Since then, I have helped produce 2 other products; Target and PatientPack Video.

I then became Technical Lead, where I lead the development team of 4 while also being involved in the technical strategy and planning of improvements and new features.

Co-Founder and Technical Director - Studio Bonito

July 2010 - Sept 2016

Straight from University, I set up a Web Development studio with a freelancer I had previously worked with. We started with building brochure sites for local businesses that developed into building web applications and large scale systems.

I wrote the specifications, did the initial planning, built, and delivered all of the projects within the agency. For the build I was involved throughout the stack, from front end cut ups, to building the application in the back end.
